John’s explanation of what a Bünzli is

John wrote to us about the Swiss Word Bünzli, which was a topic in our episode ‘Swiss German words that don't translate to English: part two’. With his permission, please enjoy his perfect explanation.

The term "Bünzli" is a colloquial Swiss-German word that describes a particular type of person known for their meticulousness and strict adherence to rules. A Bünzli is highly organized, values routine, and is intolerant of rule-breakers. They often display a strong sense of patriotism, coupled with a cautious or sometimes suspicious attitude towards foreign cultures and people. This individual is keenly observant, especially concerning their neighbors and local community, and won't hesitate to voice complaints if something disrupts their orderly world.

While some might admire aspects of Bünzli behavior, such as their cleanliness, organization, and respect for traditions, many, especially Brits, might find them overbearing and nosy. This can be particularly problematic if you have a Bünzli neighbor in an apartment building, as they might come across as meddlesome or overly critical.

Interestingly, there isn't an exact equivalent in the UK for this term. While certain behavioral traits might be recognized, the concept encapsulated by "Bünzli" seems to be a uniquely Swiss-German phenomenon.

So it seems impossible to find one word that translates to bunzli but it’s an essential concept for all newcomers to know about 😂😂

The experience of going to see a film in Switzerland has some quirks. The first question you’re probably going to ask yourself when trying to catch a new release is what language it’s going to be shown in and secondly, how much the pleasure is going to set you back.

In this episode, we talk about which kind of cinema typically shows films in which languages, how dubbing or subtitles come into play, the financial consequences of a cinema trip in Switzerland and where to find out what’s on.
